LONG LIVE THE DARK KNIGHT

Dark Knight' Breaks DVD And Blu-ray Sales Records In Just One WeeK

It hasn't been long since 'The Dark Knight' hit store shelves but DVD and Blu-ray sales of the movie are already shattering records.

The film has already sold a whopping 13.5 million units worldwide, including a record 1.7 million on Blu-ray, to become the best selling DVD of 2008 -- in only the first week of its release. A trend that is sure to continue with the holiday shopping season now in full swing.

Warner Bros. has said that the response to the digital copy of the movie included on the Blu-ray and Special Edition DVD has also been strong with more than 300,000 users activating their digital copies.

'The Dark Knight' marked the first time that a major feature film was partially shot using IMAX cameras, and that is said to be another reason for movie's successful transition to DVD, after breaking box office records this summer.

The film recently earned a Golden Globe nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category for Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker and was the year's highest-grossing film at the North American box office. It will be re-released to cinemas in January, to help cross the elusive $1 billion mark in earnings and attempt to be fresh in minds for an Oscar push.

Argentina to trial vanishing free kick spray
Reuters
December 10, 2008

Argentina will use a vanishing spray in first division games next year in an attempt to stop defensive walls from creeping forward at free kicks.

The spray has been used on an experimental basis in the second division for the last six months and the Argentina Football Association (AFA) has now approved its use in the top flight, officials said on Wednesday.

Referees pace the regulatory 10-yards between the ball and the nearest defender and then spray a white line on the pitch to mark the correct position of the wall.

The line then disappears from the pitch within a minute.

Referees carry the spray in a small aerosol can weighing 115 grams.

Pablo Silva, a sports journalist who invented the spray and has worked with chemical engineers to develop the product, said the idea came to him when he was foiled at a free kick during an amateur game several years ago.

"In the 88th minute, we were losing 1-0 and won a free kick on the edge of the area. When I took the kick, the wall was three metres away," he said earlier this year.

"The referee didn't book anyone and didn't do anything.

"We lost the game and, driving home later with a mixture of anger and bitterness, I thought that we must invent something to stop this."

A spray has been used in some competitions in Brazil in the last few years for the same purpose. Silva said the products were different and had been developed separately.

APPARENTLY THERES ALSO A SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND INTELLIGENCE; anyone condemning stem cell research in the name of "embroes'' is an asshole

Vatican Hardens Opposition To Stem Cell Research

VATICAN CITY - The Vatican hardened its opposition Friday to using embryos for stem cell research, cloning and in-vitro fertilization. But in a major new document on bioethics, it showed flexibility on some forms of gene therapy and left open questions surrounding embryo adoption.

The Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued "The Dignity of a Person" to help answer bioethical questions that have emerged in the two decades since its last such document was published.

With it, the Vatican essentially confirmed in a single, authoritative instruction the opinions of the Pontifical Academy for Life, a Vatican advisory body that has debated these issues for years.

The Vatican's overall position stems from its belief that human life begins at conception and must be given the consequent respect and dignity from that moment on. The Vatican also holds that human life should be created through intercourse between husband and wife, not in a petri dish.

As a result, the Vatican said it opposed in vitro fertilization and related technologies because it involved separating conception from the "conjugal act" and often results in the destruction of embryos.

But it stopped short of issuing an explicit no to "embryo adoption," whereby infertile couples adopt embryos that were frozen during in vitro techniques and subsequently abandoned. It said that while the intent was "praiseworthy," the result posed legal, medical and psychological problems.

Dr. Edmund Pellegrino, emeritus professor of medicine and medical ethics at Georgetown University and the chairman of the President's Council on Bioethics, said that vagueness indicated that the question of embryo adoption "is still a little bit open."

"That means we're not issuing dicta on things which may be questionable," he said in an interview from Washington.

He said the document was valuable not because it contained any new pronouncements, but because it made explicit, and in one authoritative place, Vatican positions on issues that have emerged since the last such document was published in 1987, "Donum Vitae," or "Gift of Life."

"The important thing is the linking (of the scientific advances) with the dignity of the human person, and the notion of the church's teaching on procreation," he said.

The Vatican said it opposed the morning-after pill, even if it doesn't cause an abortion, because an abortion was intended. That could complicate the situation of some Catholic hospitals in the United States that offer the morning-after pill to rape victims.

In the use of drugs such as RU-486, which causes the elimination of the embryo once it is implanted, the "sin of abortion" is committed, the document said, thus their use is "gravely immoral."

The Vatican did show flexibility in saying that parents could in good conscience use vaccines for their children that were prepared using cell lines derived from an "illicit origin." Religious groups in the United States have pressed the Vatican to issue a statement concerning the morality of using vaccines prepared using cell lines derived from aborted fetuses.

"Grave reasons may be morally proportionate to justify the use of such 'biological material,'" the instruction said, adding that the parents would have to make known their disagreement with the way the vaccines were developed and press for alternatives.

But the document was strong in stressing that researchers using such material had a greater degree of responsibility. It said they had a moral duty to remove themselves from the "evil aspects" of the original, illicit act _ even if they and their institutions had nothing to do with it.

The document said gene therapy on regular cells in the body other than reproductive ones was in principle morally licit since it sought to "restore the normal genetic configuration of the patient or to counter damage caused by genetic anomalies."

But it said cell therapy that seeks to correct genetic defects with the aim of transmitting the therapy to offspring was more problematic.

"Because the risks connected to any genetic manipulation are considerable and as yet not fully controllable, in the present state of research, it is not morally permissible to act in a way that may cause harm to the resulting progeny," the document said.

In the instruction, the Vatican repeated that it supported research involving adult stem cells. But it said obtaining stem cells from a living embryo was "gravely illicit."

It repeated its opposition to human cloning for both medical therapies and reproduction. Such techniques could result in an individual being subjected to a form of "biological slavery from which it would be difficult to free himself."

It noted therapeutic cloning techniques in which embryonic-type stem cells can be produced without destroying true embryos. The document didn't rule definitively on the technology, known as altered nuclear transfer, saying there were still questions about what was produced.

I NOW FEEL OBLIGATED TO ADD THIS

Listen Up: Headphones and Earbuds May Cause Hearing Loss
By Martha Irvine, Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) -- Everywhere she turns, Angella Day sees people carrying portable music players, often with the ear buds stuffed firmly in place. "They're very widespread,'' says Day, a senior at Chicago's DePaul University who regularly listens to music on her own iPod while studying or working out. "So addicting.''

What she and others may not realize is that many people their age have already damaged their hearing. And researchers fear that the growing popularity of portable music players and other items that attach directly to the ears -- including cell phones -- is only making it worse.

"It's a different level of use than we've seen in the past,'' says Robert Novak, director of clinical education in audiology at Purdue University in Indiana. "It's becoming more of a full-day listening experience, as opposed to just when you're jogging.''

Increasingly, Novak says he's seeing too many young people with "older ears on younger bodies'' -- a trend that's been building since the portable Walkman made its debut a few decades back.

To document the trend, he and colleagues have been randomly examining students and found a disturbing and growing incidence of what is known as noise-induced hearing loss. Usually, it means they've lost the ability to hear higher frequencies, evidenced at times by mild ear-ringing or trouble following conversations in noisy situations.

Hearing specialists say they're also seeing more people in their 30s and 40s -- many of them among the first Walkman users -- who suffer from more pronounced tinnitus, an internal ringing or even the sound of whooshing or buzzing in the ears.

"It may be that we're seeing the tip of the iceberg now,'' says Dr. John Oghalai, director of The Hearing Center at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, who's treating more of this age group. "I would not be surprised if we start to see even more of this.''

Noise-induced hearing loss happens any number of ways, from attending noisy concerts and clubs to using firearms or loud power tools and even recreational vehicles (snowmobiles and some motorcycles are among the offenders).

Today, doctors say many people also are wearing headphones, not just to enjoy music, but also to block out ambient noise on buses, trains or just the street. And all of it can contribute to hearing loss.

"The tricky part is that you don't know early on. It takes multiple exposures and sometimes years to find out,'' says Dr. Colin Driscoll, an otologist at Minnesota's Mayo Clinic.

One telltale sign that you've done damage to your ears is when you leave a loud venue with ringing ears. If you rest your ears, they might recover, at least partially, doctors say. But with repeated exposure comes more damage to the hair cells in the inner ear, which are key to good hearing.

With long-lasting rechargeable batteries, people who use portable music players also are listening longer -- and not giving their ears a rest, says Deanna Meinke, an audiologist at the University of Northern Colorado who heads the National Hearing Conservation Association's task force on children and hearing.

Often, she says, people also turn up the volume to ear-damaging levels.

A survey published this summer by Australia's National Acoustic Laboratories found, for instance, that about 25 percent of people using portable stereos had daily noise exposures high enough to cause hearing damage. And further research by Britain's Royal National Institute for Deaf People determined that young people, ages 18 to 24, were more likely than other adults to exceed safe listening limits.

How much is too much?

Meinke says a good rule of thumb comes from a study published in December: Researchers at Boston Children's Hospital determined that listening to a portable music player with headphones at 60 percent of its potential volume for one hour a day is relatively safe.

Experts also recommend protecting hearing in other ways -- standing away from loud speakers, for instance, and using hearing protection when using machinery at work, home or for recreation.

Day, the DePaul student, concedes that she's never thought to carry ear plugs with her, as Driscoll at Mayo Clinic and others suggest.

"So what if you gave them out at the door at the concert? Would people wear them more?'' Driscoll asks. "I think some would.''

To that end, professional musicians have formed Hearing Education and Awareness for Rockers (HEAR) to promote hearing protection. And Meinke's committee is developing a teacher kit with a meter to show dangerous levels of sound -- something educators in Oregon also have demonstrated with a Web-based program called Dangerous Decibels.

"In the future,'' Meinke says, "I hope people will wear ear plugs the same as they wear their bike helmets or wear a seat belt.''-livescience.com

NAUGHTY GIRL: MADONNA

Cardinal Blasts 'Shameless' Madonna For Giving 'Impure Thoughts'

Chilean fans may be excited about Madonna's concert in Santiago, but at least one prominent religious leader isn't.

"This woman comes here and, in an incredibly shameless manner, she provokes a crazy enthusiasm, an enthusiasm of lust, lustful thoughts, impure thoughts," says Roman Catholic Cardinal Jorge Medina.

Medina's remarks come after hundreds of fans camped out for three days to get good seats for a concert at the National Stadium in Santiago.

About 60,000 people were expected at the first of two live performances in the country.

The now retired cardinal was chosen to announce the election of Pope Benedict XV.

THIS IS A DISGUSTING TREND. I HATE VIDEO GAMES AND WHAT THEYRE DOING TO SOCIETY.

November Video Game Sales Near $3 Billion

NEW YORK - Americans may be cutting back on holiday shopping, but they are still buying video games _ to the tune of nearly $3 billion in November, according to data from market researcher NPD Group.

U.S. retail sales of video game hardware, software and accessories jumped 10 percent last month from the year-ago period to $2.91 billion, boosted by strong sales of Nintendo Co.'s Wii, Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 and the alien shooter game "Gears of War 2."

The availability of a broad range of games is one reason for the industry's ongoing solid performance, said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. Games also provide a relatively cheap form of stay-at-home entertainment.

The industry, Frazier said, is still on track to rack up $22 billion in U.S. sales this year.

November and December are crucial months for video game companies. Many of them make the bulk of their money during the holidays.

This week, Electronic Arts Inc., the publisher of the popular "Madden" football game series, warned that sales have been weak in North America and Europe. Without giving specific guidance, EA said its fiscal 2009 results will fall short of the forecast it gave in October. But EA's warning did not seem to signal a broader downturn for the industry.

Hardware sales, which include gaming consoles like the Wii as well as handheld systems like Sony Corp.'s PSP, jumped 10 percent to $1.21 billion.

Nintendo enjoyed perhaps the greatest success in November, with 2 million Wiis sold _ the most yet in a month, according to Denise Kaigler, vice president of corporate affairs. The Japanese company boosted production of the easy-to-master gaming system in July to keep up with seemingly insatiable demand. Nonetheless, on Thursday afternoon, both Best Buy's and Wal-Mart's Web sites were out of stock.

Microsoft's Xbox 360, meanwhile, sold 836,000 units. Spokesman David Dennis said the company's games business had "great momentum" heading into the final stretch of the holiday season. The PlayStation 3, from Sony, sold 378,000 units.

Sales of video game software grew 11 percent to $1.31 billion. Besides "Gears of War 2," which sold 1.6 million copies, "Call of Duty: World at War" by Activision Blizzard Inc. and Nintendo's "Wii Play" and "Wii Fit" also did well. Electronic Arts had just one title, the zombie horror game "Left 4 Dead," in the top 10.

JUST GLOBAL WARMING. NO BIGGIE...

Greenhouse Gases Warming North America Unevenly

WASHINGTON - Climate change caused by greenhouse gases is warming the United States, though unevenly, government researchers said Thursday.

"The continent as a whole is warming, mostly as a result of the energy sources we are using," William J. Brennan, acting administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said at a briefing on the nation's climate since 1951.

But there is a "warming hole" where no change occurred in the center of the country, roughly between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachians, added Martin Hoerling of NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory.

Last year the International Panel on Climate Change, studying the planet as a whole, concluded that global warming is "unequivocal, is already happening, and is caused by human activity."

Thursday's report localized the analysis, concluding that average surface temperatures over the United States have increased 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit since 1951, nearly all in the last 30 years.

Weather observations are the Rosetta stone, Hoerling said, "We see a cause-effect relationship in data."

He said that human-induced warming is the overall driving factor and also is the major cause of changes in sea-surface temperature.

Sea temperatures, in turn, result in the uneven changes over land by affecting wind and storm movement. Climate experts have learned a lot about this effect in recent years by studying the periodic El Nino and La Nina patterns of unusual warming or cooling of the tropical Pacific Ocean and how those changes alter weather.

Currently the Pacific is in a neutral condition between the two extremes, and in a separate report Thursday NOAA's Climate Prediction Center said neutral conditions are likely to continue through early next year.

And in yet a third report released Thursday, NOAA's National Climatic Data Center reported that November's average temperature for the contiguous United States was 44.5 degrees, 2.0 degrees warmer than average. It was the warmest November on record for the Western states.

For the January-November period, the average temperature of 54.9 degrees F was 0.3 degree above the 20th century average.

The nation's January-November temperature has increased at a rate of 0.12 degrees per decade since 1895, and at a faster rate of 0.41 degrees each decade during the last 50 years.

NCDC said precipitation across the contiguous United States in November averaged 1.93 inches, which is 0.20 inch below the 1901-2000 average.

Meanwhile, in Poznan, Poland, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday warned the world against backsliding in the fight against climate change as it battles financial crisis. He called for a renewed sense of urgency in facing "the defining challenge of our era."

Ban spoke as some 145 environment ministers and other top officials gathered to help push efforts to secure agreement next year on a new worldwide treaty to cut greenhouse gas emissions, which would take effect in 2013.

In addition to the 1.6 degree warming since 1951, key findings of the North America climate change report included:

_Six of the 10 warmest summers in the continental United States since 1951 occurred between 1997 and 2006.

_The largest yearly average regional temperature increases have occurred over Northern and Western North America, with up to 3.6 degrees warming in 56 years over Alaska, the Yukon Territories, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

_No significant yearly average temperature changes have occurred in the Southern United States and Eastern Canada.

_More than half of the warming averaged over all of North America is probably the result of human activity.

_Regional temperature trends are likely to have been influenced by regional variations in sea surface temperature.

_There has not been a significant trend, either up or down, in North American precipitation since 1951, although there have been substantial changes from year to year and even decade to decade.

_It is unlikely that a fundamental change has occurred in either how often or where severe droughts have occurred over the continental United States during the past half-century.

_However, overall drought impacts over North America have become more severe in recent decades.

_It is likely that warming resulting from human activity has increased drought impacts over North America in recent decades through increased water stresses associated with warming land surface temperatures.

Tom Cruise: More Of 'Tropic Thunder's Les Grossman Coming Soon

Tom Cruise earned a Golden Globe nomination for his comedic performance in 'Tropic Thunder' as Hollywood Mogul Les Grossman, and soon we may see more of the character.

Cruise admits he loved playing his foulmouthed alter-ego and tells E! that he's working on more from the bald yet hairy-chested studio boss.

"I've talked about doing different videos with the character," says Cruise. "I've started working with Ben (Stiller) on it, and we've kind of talked about different things to do. We were gonna do some in our free time, but we haven't found the free time... yet."

Cruise doesn't rule out a movie based on Grossman: "He's a fun character... I gotta talk to Ben, but there could be more to do with that guy."

"I'm really thrilled. Kate called me, and family and friends. It's just very exciting," Cruise says about his Golden Globe nomination for the role.

But how would Les Grossman react? "Les would probably say something unprintable. First thing when you hear about that character is, just what would that guy say? It would have to be something unprintable."

The first reviews for Cruise's WWII thriller Valkyrie, which opens on Christmas Day, are coming in and they're mixed.

The Reporter's Kirk Honeycutt says while the release should enjoy modest success, but "if Cruise's career is seen as momentarily stalled, 'Valkyrie' is not the electric jolt he needs to jump-start it." Variety concludes that Valkyrie "looks destined for just so-so commercial returns."-TVShark.com

Smoking blunts was a daily routine

And sidekicks with my sidekicks rockin fly kicks
Honeys want to chat
But all we wanna know is "Where the party at?"
And can i bring my gat?
If not, I hope I don't get shot
But i throw my vest on my chest
'Cause niggaz is a mess
It don't take nothin' but frontin'
For me to start somethin'
Buggin' and barkin' at niggaz like i was duck huntin'
Dumbing out, just me and my crew
Cause all we wanna do is...

Chorus:
Party... And bullshit, and... (x9)

Hugs from the honeys, Pounds from the roughnecks
Seen my man Sei that I knew from the projects
Said he had beef, asked me if I had my peice
Sure do, two .22's in my shoes
Holler if you need me love i'm in the house
Roam and strollin' see what the honeys is about
Moet popping, hoe hopping, ain't no stopping Big Poppa, I'm a BAD BOY
Niggaz wanna front, who got your back? (BIGGIE!)
Niggaz wanna flex, who got the gat? (BIGGIE!)
It ain't hard to tell I'm the east coast overdoser
Nigga you scared you're supposed to
Nigga I toast ya, put fear in your heart
Fuck up the party before it even start
Pissy drunk, off the Henny and skunk
Or some brand-nubian shit beatin' down punks!

Chorus

Bitches in the back looking righteous
In a tight dress, i think i might just
Hit her with a little Biggie 101, How to tote a gun
And have fun with Jamaician rum
Conversations, blunts in rotation
My man Big Jacques got the glock in his waist and
we're smoking, drinking, got the hooker thinking
If money smell bad than this nigga Biggie stinking
Is it my charm? I got the hookers eatin out my palm
She grabbed my arm and said "Let's leave calm"
I'm hittin' skins again
Rolled up another blunt, bought a Heineken
Niggaz start to loke out, a kid got choked out
Blows was thrown and a fucking fight broke out

[Music stops, indecipherable sounds of people yelling and arguing,
Biggie breaks it up yelling "Yo chill, man, chill!"]

Can't we just all get along?
So i can put hickies on her chest like Li'l Shawn
Get her pissy drunk off of Don Perrignon
And it's on, and I'm gone
