Unexpected Result Rules Another Day

Time trials are always exciting on television because the time checks create suspense. But this short test was a cracker and a victory by Stefan Schumacher was so unexpected.
So for the second day, there was a winner and wearer of the yellow jersey from an unexpected quarter, which is really what we had hoped for from this Tour. Are we seeing a "clean" race without drugs, thereby giving us these different results? Who knows?
Certainly the two American teams have come out fighting and with Garmin-Chipotle's David Millar taking third by a whisker behind Kim Kirchen, who is now set to be the next yellow jersey.
There were two big surprises: no win for world champion Fabian Cancellara and a big time loss for Alejandro Valverde. Cancellara will feel a little dent in his pride, but Valverde was reminded that the great form he has been enjoying these past few weeks may be on the wane.
Cadel Evans gained 1 “06” on him and heads towards the mountains in the best position of the grand favorites. For the Aussie, it's a good start, but he knows there is still a long way to go.
