OBAMA/SUPERMAN

Reaction After Obama Addresses Muslims

CAIRO (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama sought a "new beginning" between the United States and Muslims in a speech on Thursday but offered no new initiative to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, an omission likely to disappoint many.

Below are reactions to his speech delivered from Cairo University in Egypt:

NABIL ABU RDAINAH, SPOKESMAN FOR PALESTINIAN PRESIDENT

"His call for stopping settlement and for the establishment of a Palestinian state, and his reference to the suffering of Palestinians ... is a clear message to Israel that a just peace is built on the foundations of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital."

"President Obama's speech is a good start and an important step towards a new American policy."

ALI AL-DABBAGH, IRAQI GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN

"The speech was historic and important and reflects a positive direction for the new administration (in Washington) and it is a new start."

"The use of Koranic sayings plays a big part in a positive change of picture, but there is a necessity for action."

"The government of Iraq is comfortable with the clarity of the president in respecting commitments to Iraq and the timetable for withdrawal stipulated in the security pact."

"I think there is clear support of a right for a Palestinian state, and their right for a life, but Arabs are waiting for pressure to be exerted on Israel so it can stop its violations in Gaza and the West Bank."

HAZIM AL-NUAIMI, ANALYST AT BAGHDAD UNIVERSITY

"He gave nothing new to Iraqis. He gave one promise, to respect the rights of minorites and work with consensus. In all he says, he tries to remove himself from all that happened in Iraq."

ISSANDR EL-AMRANI, INDEPENDENT POLITICAL ANALYST IN EGYPT

"I can't say I am overwhelmingly impressed by the speech. The strongest point was probably that the situation of the Palestinians is intolerable. I would have liked to see a more specific addressing of the question of Gaza, and the ongoing blockade of Gaza, the lack of availability of reconstruction materials."

"I think it will achieve its goal of generating some goodwill. I think whether among Egyptians or elsewhere there was a lot of scepticism about the speech, scepticism that contained also a nugget of optimism."

RANDA ACHMAWI, DIPLOMATIC EDITOR FOR EGYPT'S AL-AHRAM HEBDO

"America for the first time is adopting a very wise strategy in acknowledging the other and that was clear in every word chosen by President Obama."

"In this context, where we see an Israeli government who is refusing even the least principles of the two-state solution, he made clear the American vision ... There is nothing innovative."

OBAMA STEALS THE SPOTLIGHT AT MTV EUROPE VMAs

Paul McCartney may have been crowned a legend and Britney Spears named Act of the Year but it was President-elect Barack Obama who stole the show at last night’s European MTV awards.

Obama fever dominated the 15th MTV Europe Music Awards ceremony at the Liverpool Echo Arena, with artists competing in their tributes to the future US leader.

Presenter for the night, Katy Perry - who opened the ceremony dressed as an American footballer straddling a giant cherry chapstick to perform her hit I Kissed A Girl - also donned an oversized yellow T-shirt with a print of Obama’s face.

Jared Leto, of 30 Seconds to Mars, who won both the Rock Out and Video Star awards, had the audience on their feet to honour the President-elect. "Lets hear it for Barack Obama," he said, prompting the loudest cheers of the night.

Sugababes also got in on the act, with Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Range and Heidi Berrabah wearing red, white and blue when they came on stage to present Pink with the gong for Most Addictive Track.

And McCartney, who picked up MTV’s one-off Ultimate Legend Award, closed his acceptance speech by thanking “everyone in America for voting in Mr Obama”.

Other awards last night went to German band Tokio Hotel, named Headliner, and Kanye West who picked up the Ultimate Urban award. Britney Spears, who did not attend the ceremony, won two awards for Album of the Year and Act of 2008.

The most surprising winner of the night was Rick Astley, who scooped Best Act Ever as voted by the public. MTV was last night putting the shock win down to the internet craze Rickrolling. Astley was not able to accept the award, but in his absence Perry and co-presenter Perez Hilton pleased the crowd with a dance routine to his famous track Never Gonna Give You Up.

LETTER TO THEM RED STATERS

When I can't eloquently express myself, I look for others to do it for me. I believe the voice-over at the end of American History X echoed those same sentiments. Regardless, JJCM, the man who brought you NOBODY BELIEVED ME, provides some great commentary in a classic e-mail exchange with a virulent John McCain and Sarah Palin supporter.

First, the email from McCain/Palin:

I hope you're not drinking the cool aid! Palin is Commander-in-Chief of the only permanent National Guard unit on 24 hour duty the 49TH Missile Defense Unit in Alaska, responsible for the NORAD missile shield protecting the US and Canada. As such she is privy to top level intelligence on the level of the Secretary of Defense. So living near Russia she does have a clearer insight. In fact she has a security level that Obama would be denied because of his past associations with known terrorists and subversives..Obama is an empty suit at best and a Marxist at worst. In regard to our image, with whom? Iran? Venezuela? North Korea? As far as Europe goes, they have been a paper tiger throughout this whole world-wide terrorist threat and financial crisis. The rest of the world has been a socialist night-mare. We don't want that system here...we've become great militarily, economically, technologically and culturally..because of our system. The same system O'B wants to "change" into what? A third world country!

Now, JJCM with his reply:

Come on, do you really think that O'B will change it to the Socialist States of America? I do not think he is that bad. Even McCain said that he was a good person and a family man and a Christian when he shot down the supporter at a rally who thought O'Bama would make America an Islamic republic. I simply do not think this will be the case. I feel like it would be an injustice to my education which focused on economics and history. As governor of Alaska, Palin might well have had the opportunity to deal with Russia, but she never did deal with them, so I don't think the fact that she had a security clearance makes her more qualified.

Obama is a smart guy, I read his book "Dreams from my Father" when I was in college. I did not think that he would make such a fast political climb, but I believe he was pushed very quickly due to his array of assets. Namely being a great speaker, a guy who was able to come from humble beginning to climb to top of a very well-structured and difficult to enter hierarchy of US politics. Unless you are a Clinton, Bush, war hero, movie star, peanut farmer, you will have difficulty becoming President. It is a funny job for a funny individual. I do not think the best person in America to be president would ever become president because it seems like a job where the ends don't justify the means.

I like how you spell Obama's name with the O'B it makes me think that he is Irish.
What about Palin's inability to explain her "experience"? I haven't really heard much from her besides her "Pit bull with lipstick" gig, that is a worse image than Hillary. You can't compare Obama and Palin different types of leaders and different prospect in the Commander-in-Chief role.Mccain's economic advisors pale in comparison to Obama's, Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina, give me a break. Compared to Buffett, Robert Rubin, Volcker, etc. they wouldn't be supporting a socialist although you may disagree.

If you think that he's a socialist becuase he wants to raise the top tax bracket from 35-39%, Clinton did the same thing and we saw huge job/economic growth.
And if you think he is a socialist because he said we have to "spread the wealth," what's wrong with using federal money to encourage a REAL middle class, one that can afford quality education, etc. Instead of bailing out a system that always wanted government to let it run freely, and be completely laissez-faire.

I remember you saying that there was too much regulation a few years ago when I was spending a lot of time in your office. Money has to be generated from somewhere. I haven't seen any true economic growth that has justified such inflation and overspeculation. Now, everyone is so worried because they know the money isn't going to appear out of nowhere. This federal bailout sealed the end of capitalism as we knew it for the past few decades. The system is flawed, unless Wall Street can generate $750 billion plus interest plus opportunity cost. I don't see this happening unless we create some breakthrough technology. Hopefully in the energy realm, that will make is more self sufficient and in turn improve our national security.

I still have hope in my country, but don't see a miracle cure.

Whatever happens God would look over us. Keep the faith.

Your intern,

J.J. Cyril M.

Colin Powell Endorses Obama On Meet the Press

Appearing on MSNBC's 'Meet the Press', former Secretary of State Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama for president

Powell criticized his own Republican Party for what he called its "narrow focus" on personal attacks.

“I look at these kind of approaches to the campaign, and they trouble me,” Powell said about accusations that Obama was a Muslim and his alleged link to Ayers. “Over the last seven weeks, the approach of the Republican Party has become narrower and narrower.”

Although Powell made a contribution to McCain's campaign when it began, Powell endorsed Obama in the appearance and said he hasn't understood McCain’s judgement over the course of the campaign, especially his selection of Gov. Sarah Palin.

“I don’t believe Palin is ready to be president of the United States,” Powell said.

"I think Obama is a transformational figure, he is a new generation coming onto the world stage, onto the American stage, and for that reason I will be voting for Senator Barack Obama," Powell told Tom Brokaw.

Barry O Receives Another Endorsement

From conservative Christopher Buckley to Bush Secretary of State Colin Powell to Google CEO Eric Schmidt, Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama has been on a roll lately. Today he received another endorsement, this one from the head of the Pinko Commie Anti-America League, the New York Times.

Barack Obama For President

Though the support of the Times is predictable, both because Obama's the far better candidate and most of the Times Op-Ed board are card-carrying Democrats, it is still a worthwhile read, spelling out a point-by-point rebuttal of the John McCain/Sarah Palin tandem, quite possibly the most anti-American duo since Sgt. Slaughter and the Iron Shiek. The fact that Sarah Palin is still taken seriously is a testament to the failing American educational system and, well, ignorance. Consider this...

"WASHINGTON – An acclaimed celebrity makeup artist for Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin collected more money from John McCain's campaign than his foreign policy adviser. Amy Strozzi, who works on the reality show "So You Think You Can Dance" and has been Palin's traveling stylist, was paid $22,800, according to campaign finance reports for the first two weeks in October. In contrast, McCain's foreign policy adviser, Randy Scheunemann, was paid $12,500, the report showed."

"at least Palin is hot!!!!!" is a common retort from FoxNews, but really? More for a stylist than a foreign policy rep? I guess when you're that close to Russia, you don't need any coaching. Perhaps they could find a public speaking coach for McCain, he's been struggling lately:

PRESIDENTIAL RACE IS MAKING ME SICK

my friend Conaboo just sent me to this video.    OK, OK, OK.  Maybe it was a big deal, maybe it wasn't.  But personally, I think McCain is getting a little too much heat for "that one" comment.  In the same light that Obama didn't mean to draw heat for his lipstick comment, I don' t see McCain meaning referring to Obama as 'that one' was a malicious attack.  Now to say it wasn't in anyway professional is another subject.  During a presidential debate I can't believe a candidate would be so unprofessional as to use that termanology to refer to his opponent as 'that one', regardless of race, creed or gender.  That is just disprespectful, thats what it is.  So maybe he is a bigot, I mean I'd like to think as much negative as possible about McCain.  But more than anything else, and in accordance with how he and the republican ticket act in general during this campaign, he is a disrespectful bastard.  Not to mention how McCain just wandered around while Obama was speaking during the debate while he should have been seated giving Obama the stage.  Or how he interuped Obama during his talk and chimed in throwing out words.

PRESIDENTIAL RACE IS MAKING ME SICK

This campaign ad from McCain is gross and just the ultimate propaganda.  He is blatantly trying to tie together the negative (rightfully so) association with Brittany Spears and Paris Hilton to Barack Obama.  I can't express how much this disgusts me.  Two women that are half of Obama's age (1/8 of McCains) that are atop the pop-culture stage thanks to their party, music, and sex are one thing.  A popular figure, no an American Icon, Barack Obama, is another.  McCain's attempt that subliminally advertising their association is atrocious.  It should be noted that that massive sea of people chanting Obama's name aren't Americans; their German.
